Quick answers
Steam multiplayer is live; crossplay and a fixed hard cap are not confirmed.
Public servers are now available through the in-game browser. Patch 1.07 also adds password-protected sessions and broader friend joins.
- Crossplay: No reviewed official source confirms cross-platform play. The documented release target is Steam on Windows.
- Max players: Around four is the developer recommendation for the best-balanced crew, not a verified hard limit. Hosts do have a maximum-player-count setting.
- Public matchmaking: Patch 1.07 added an in-game browser for public servers.
- Friend invites: friends-only and invite-only sessions allow friends of connected players to join; Patch 1.07 also supports passwords.
- Solo play: supported and balanced separately, although the developer still describes co-op as the intended experience.
Public discovery, password protection, and broader friend joins are official Patch 1.07 features. The launch FAQ's no-public-matchmaking statement is preserved only as historical context.
No reviewed official source confirms cross-platform play, a stable maximum crew size, dedicated servers, host migration, region selection, or a public service-status dashboard.
Choose a lobby route
Match visibility to the crew you want.
- 01
Public crew
Open the in-game server browser and choose a public server. The patch note confirms the browser but does not document filters, regions, ping sorting, or queue behavior.
- 02
Password crew
Host a password-protected server and share the password only with the intended players. This supports discoverability without leaving the session open.
- 03
Friends or invite crew
Use the privacy setting that fits the group. Under Patch 1.07, friends of anyone already connected may join friends-only and invite-only sessions.
- 04
Discord LFG
The official Discord remains useful for agreeing on language, region, run goals, and voice expectations before joining through the game or Steam.
- 05
Solo
Single-player remains supported. The developer describes solo and small-group balance work, while recommending around four as the best-balanced crew size.
Host controls
Patch 1.04 laid the control layer that Patch 1.07 expands.
- Privacy and size: lobby privacy and maximum player count settings arrived in Patch 1.04.
- Moderation: the lobby view lets hosts adjust player mic volume and kick or ban players.
- Friend join fix: Patch 1.05 fixed a bug that blocked joining friends under friends privacy.
- Public and password: Patch 1.07 adds the public browser, password support, and more host options.
Crew size boundary
“Around four” is a balance recommendation, not a verified hard cap.
The FAQ says the game supports as many survivors as the players' setups can handle, then recommends around four. Patch 1.04 adds a maximum-player-count setting but does not publish the allowed range or a tested performance matrix.
Platform boundary
Steam on Windows is the supported multiplayer target.
- Each player needs a copy of GRAIN ROT on Steam.
- No macOS or Linux release is planned in the official FAQ.
- Gamepads are supported, but the game is not Steam Deck Verified.
